The preparation of project work is in full swing. Today, on July 4, the participants of the direction «Paleozoogeography of the cave lion in Yakutia» went to the city of Pokrovsk for field work. They explored the old Lena riverbed, the layers of the shore and minerals.
The young researchers also determined the direction of the river flow and its parameters. During the study of the area, the guys found the skull of a wolf, which was transferred to the Local History Museum named after G. V. Ksenofontov. «Since we were accompanied by the head of the local history museum, the children presented the skull to him to replenish the collection of exhibits», – said Roman Gusarov, tutors of the group and part–time head of the delegation of the Lyceum No. 17 in Khimki.
With a delegation of young paleontologists, Yulia Vasilyeva, a teacher-psychologist at the University Gymnasium of Lomonosov Moscow State University, also went on a mini-expedition. «Today I was very lucky because I was allowed to accompany the group on a practical trip», – she shared. – We saw a beautiful slope where the children made cuts, measurements, described the layers and told what they saw. It seems to me that this is the result of the work done and the training they have already received from their tutor».
Yulia Vasilyeva noted that she is not so strong in paleontology: «I am more interested in the geological aspect and in this sense I am a happy person because I found a lot of geological samples: andesite, bedrock, jasper, and most importantly – huge pieces of petrified wood. I think it will be a great investment in our university museum».
According to Georgy Godovanets from the Orthodox Gymnasium of St. Basil the Great, the scale of the nature of Yakutia is something incredible and mysterious for a person. «I really enjoyed going to different places, finding animal bones and analyzing soil layers», – he shared.
Victoria Trukhanovich from Moscow School No. 1553 also shared her impressions of the outing: «We first listened to an interesting lecture on paleozoogeography, looked at the bones and found the prints of ancient creatures. Then, we went to the quarry and made a cut of one of the stones. And in the end we came to the river to describe the bones, build a wind rose and refresh ourselves a little in the cool water in such hot weather. I liked everything very much and I am delighted with our departure».
